Hawthorne, CA, United States (4E) – SpaceX founder Elon Musk revealed a photo of a large manufacturing mold called the “main body tool” that will be used to build the “Big Falcon Rocket” (BFR), the company’s next generation launch vehicle that will take humans to Mars.
The main body tool is basically a large manufacturing mold used to assemble the carbon fiber that will comprise the upper stage of the mammoth rocket. The photo shows the body tool with a Tesla Model 3 in the foreground. The main body tool is believed to be located in an 18 acre plot at the Port of Los Angeles, which SpaceX will use as a “start-of-the-art” factory to produce the BFR.
A super heavy-lift launch vehicle, BFR can deliver a 150,000 kg payload to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It is a family of launch vehicles that will include reusable rockets and spacecraft intended to replace all of the company’s existing spacecraft by the early 2020s. The BFR system will replace the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles, as well as the Dragon crewed and uncrewed spacecraft.
In September 2017, SpaceX released detailed plans about the BFR program. Using BFR, SpaceX plans to send cargo to Mars by 2022 and people by 2024. Musk boasted BFR is on track to begin testing “short trips” by the “first half of next year.” BFR is 58 meters tall and will be powered by 31 Raptor cryogenic, methane-fueled rocket engines.
