Seymour, IN, United States (4E) – At the behest of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Rose Acre Farms (the second largest egg producer in the United States) is voluntarily recalling 206,749,248 eggs that have the potential to be contaminated with “Salmonella Braenderup.” Twenty-two illnesses caused by this type of bacteria have been reported to date.
This organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella Braenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella Braenderup can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
FDA said the eggs were distributed from the company’s farm in Hyde County, North Carolina and reached consumers in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery. Rose Acre Farms is based in Seymour, Indiana.
This recall is the largest egg recall in the USA since 2010 when more than 550 million table eggs were recalled from two Iowa egg farms owned by Austin (Jack) DeCoster. The eggs were involved in a nationwide Salmonella outbreak that sickened thousands.
Jack and his son, Peter, each pleaded guilty to one count of allowing misbranded and adultered food to enter interstate commerce. The DeCosters and their company, Quality Egg LLC, paid $7 million in fines. Both DeCosters served three months in federal prison.
The voluntary recall was a result of some illnesses reported on the East Coast, which led to extensive interviews. It also led to a thorough FDA inspection of the Hyde County farm, which produces 2.3 million eggs a day. The facility includes three million laying hens with a USDA inspector on-site daily.
Consumers that have purchased Rose Acre Farms eggs are urged to immediately discontinue use of the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (855) 215-5730 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
