Cupertino, CA, United States (4E) – The all-new Apple iMac Pro, which Apple proudly states is the most powerful Mac computer ever made, hits Apple Store shelves nationwide on Dec. 14. The price: $4,999.
iMac Pro is a professional all-in-one Macintosh desktop computer designed for speed, and reviews confirm this claim. It’s also got the job of preventing more Mac users from jumping ship and joining Windows.
It’s been over three years (Oct. 2014) since the last iMac was released (the slim body with the retina 5K display) and in that time Windows released Windows 10 in July 2015.
Windows’ latest OS, while not living entirely up to expectations, is running on more than 600 million devices as of Nov. 2017. It’s on 32% of traditional PCs and 15% across all platforms (PC, mobile, tablet, and console).
This is what the iMac Pro has to deal with but the hardware the iMac Pro brings to the fight is pretty impressive.
To begin with, the iMac Pro is an entirely new workstation-class product line designed for pro users with the most demanding workflows.
It’s fronted by a gorgeous 27-inch Retina 5K display; 18 core Intel Xeon processors and up to 22 Teraflops of graphics computation. This stuff makes the iMac Pro the most powerful Mac ever made, says Apple.
The iMac Pro packs incredible performance for advanced graphics editing, virtual reality content creation and real-time 3D rendering. It comes in a new space gray design while the 27-inch Retina 5K display supports 1 billion colors.
Apple reengineered the whole system and designed an entirely new thermal architecture to pack extraordinary performance into the elegant, quiet iMac enclosure.
Innovative thermal architecture gives iMac Pro 80 percent more cooling capacity, enabling extreme performance in the same thin and seamless iMac design.
Featuring next-generation Intel Xeon processors up to 18 cores, iMac Pro is designed to handle the most demanding pro workflows. With its all-flash architecture and all-new thermal design, iMac Pro delivers up to 80 percent more cooling capacity in the same thin and seamless iMac design.
“iMac Pro is a huge step forward and there’s never been anything like it,” said John Ternus, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering.
iMac Pro comes with the new Radeon Pro Vega GPU, the most advanced graphics ever in a Mac. Featuring a new next-generation compute core and up to 16GB of on-package high-bandwidth memory (HBM2), iMac Pro with the Vega GPU delivers up to an amazing 11 Teraflops of single-precision compute power for real-time 3D rendering and immersive, high frame rate VR.
iMac Pro delivers up to an incredible 22 Teraflops of performance.
iMac Pro also supports up to 4TB of SSD and up to 128GB of ECC memory, and with four Thunderbolt 3 ports can connect to up to two high-performance RAID arrays and two 5K displays at the same time. For the first time ever on a Mac, iMac Pro features 10Gb Ethernet for up to 10 times faster networking.
