Fort Lauderdale, FL., United States (4E) – A lightning strike caused a transformer fire, knocking out power to much of the city of Fort Lauderdale Tuesday night.
Power was restored the next morning and efforts to repair any damage are ongoing.
Although no injuries were reported, balls of flame shot high into the sky, engulfing one of three transformers at an electrical substation, according to Florida Power & Light (FPL) officials.
Multiple explosions were heard around the time of the explosion, several witnesses indicated to local media.
A “Powertracker” map posted on the website’s utility reported that over 30,000 homes and business were left without power. in Broward County
More than 20,000 Fort Lauderdale customers didn’t have electricity after the incident, nearly 20 percent of the utliity’s reach in that area.
