Cupertino, CA, United States (4E) – Apple’s new iOS 12, which was unveiled June 4, fixes many of the maddening issues that made iOS 11 such a clunky and irritating system since its release last summer. And if you believe Apple’s claims, iOS 12 brings lots of speed and performance improvements for new and old iPhones.
As expected, there are a few new features in 1OS 12 and some of them are pretty nifty. Among the more commendable: opening the camera from the lock screen is up to 70% faster than in iOS 11; the keyboard pops up 50% faster and apps launch up to twice faster under heavy load
Apple said iOS 12 changes the way iOS users see the world using AR (augmented reality); makes communications fun and expressive with Memoji and Group FaceTime, and with Screen Time, helps customers understand and take control of the time they spend interacting with their iOS devices. iOS 12 introduces Siri Shortcuts that allow Siri to work with any.
“We’re very excited about the new communications features we’re bringing to iPhone and iPad with Memoji, a more personal form of Animoji, fun camera effects and Group FaceTime,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “With iOS 12, we’re enabling new experiences that weren’t possible before. We’re using advanced algorithms to make AR even more engaging and on-device intelligence to deliver faster ways to get things done using Siri.”
Here are other 1OS 12 features that get our nod:
Password autofill. You’ll find this feature in iOS 11 for webpages — but only if you use Apple’s integrated Keychain feature to manage all your passwords. Well, Keychain isn’t all that great (to put it mildly) and iOS 12 seems to have solved this irritant.
In iOS 12, a new API allows third-party password managers outside of Keychain to autofill passwords. Now, that’s great news.
SMS 2FA autofill. iOS 12 can autofill the 6-digit codes on an iPhone via SMS every time you log into an app or website with two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled, so you don’t have to memorize them or switch apps to copy and paste.
Better animation. Transition animations are much smoother on iOS 12 than on iOS 11. The difference is instantly noticeable, and it really speeds things up.
More battery information. iOS 12 offers even more battery information than iOS 11 The battery usage chart within the battery section in “Settings” now shows usage over the last 24 hours or 10 days. You can also see usage for a specific app over either of those periods of time.
Animoji winks. Animojis on iOS 12 can mimic a user’s tongue movements, which is cool, sort of. But with iOS 12, Animojis will also copy you when you wink.
Portrait Mode improvements. Portrait Mode, which was enhanced in iOS 11, has gotten even better in iOS 12. According to Apple, “Portrait mode photos are better than ever. Camera now generates a mask when it detects a person and intelligently and elegantly separates the person from the scene.”
A brand-new app called Measure. Measure helps you take measurements of real-world objects. The app uses an iPhone’s camera to take accurate readings, letting you see the width, length and height of things just by tapping your screen.
