Cupertino, CA, United States (4E) – The next iteration of the decade old Apple iPhone (referred to as the iPhone 8) is expected to hit store shelves in time for Christmas and will include a “face unlock feature” triggered by a 3D facial recognition sensor.
This bezel-less iPhone, which doesn’t have an official name as of yet, will allow users to log in, authenticate payments and launch secure apps by scanning their faces. The face unlock feature will replace the Touch ID fingerprint scanner first used in the iPhone 5.
Since the face unlock feature uses more data points than a fingerprint scan, it’s more secure than the Touch ID system, said industry sources.
The 3D sensor works blitz fast and can scan a user’s face and unlock the iPhone in a few hundred milliseconds. It’s also designed to work even if the phone lays flat on a table, rather than close to the user’s face. This feature is still being tested, however.
Apple’s sensor also has 3D depth perception, meaning it can’t be fooled into unlocking by holding the user’s photo in front of it. Apart from a new 3D sensor, the new iPhone will likely also feature eye scanning to augment the face unlock feature.
Reveal for the new iPhone is expected in late August or early September. The new phone is widely referred to as the iPhone 8. Some pundits, however, contend Apple might christen the new phone either the “iPhone Edition” or the “iPhone X.”
The “X” is the Roman numeral for the number 10, and signifies the 10th anniversary of the iPhone’s debut in June 2007.
The new phone will have glass on both the front and back that curves at the edges. A stainless steel frame between the glass houses power and volume controls.
The edge-to-edge OLED display will have cutouts in the glass for the earpiece, front facing camera and 3D facial recognition sensor. The iPhone 8 won’t have a physical home button and will have a virtual one instead.
The current models, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, were launched last fall. These models strong points are their cameras and faster speed.
