New York, NY, United States (4E) – Michael Cohen is singing a new tune, one that might land Donald Trump behind bars.
Trump’s former personal attorney and friend now says he’ll cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller and New York federal prosecutors and provide blockbuster testimony that might endanger Trump’s presidency and place Trump himself in prison after impeachment.
The man who once boasted he’d take a bullet for Trump now says “I put family and country first.” To emphasize his renewed set of loyalties, Cohen added that “My wife (Laura), my daughter (Samantha) and my son have my first loyalty and always will.”
When asked in a media interview what he’d do if prosecutors forced him to choose between protecting Trump and his family, he said his family is “my first priority.” Reminded on his past vow to take a bullet for Trump, Cohen said, “To be crystal clear, my wife, my daughter and my son, and this country have my first loyalty.”
If the president did decide to come after him, Cohen emphatically replied, “I will not be a punching bag as part of anyone’s defense strategy. I am not a villain of this story, and I will not allow others to try to depict me that way.”
New York Southern District prosecutors are investigating Cohen for alleged violations of election law and possible financial crimes associated with his personal business dealings. He hasn’t been charged with any crime but will likely testify against Trump to avoid lengthy jail time and hefty fines.
He’s not yet been interviewed yet by Mueller’s team, but has provided documents and added that he will fully cooperate with them — which is really bad news for Trump.
An indication of Cohen’s dimmer view of Trump is that he didn’t praise the president during the interview and surprisingly slammed Trump’s criticism of Mueller and his federal investigation.
Cohen also vigorously disagrees with Trump’s incessant and uncalled for attacks on the FBI.
“I don’t agree with those who demonize or vilify the FBI,” said Cohen. “I respect the FBI as an institution, as well as their agents. When they searched my hotel room and my home, it was obviously upsetting to me and my family. Nonetheless, the agents were respectful, courteous and professional. I thanked them for their service and as they left, we shook hands.”
On the other hand, Trump described the raid as a break-in and an “attack on our country, in a true sense. It’s an attack on what we all stand for.”
Many media accounts consistently paint a picture of Cohen as a devoted father to his wife of over two decades, Laura; to his stunning daughter, Samantha, and to his son (who remains unidentified but who has dreams of becoming a great basketball player). His daughter calls him “the Best Dad in the Whole World.”
Cohen spoke angrily of the harassment his family has endured because of the Stormy Daniels affair.
“My wife and I have been married for 23 years, and are now entering into the season of our lives when we get to watch our children become adults themselves,” he noted. “My daughter, who is at an Ivy League school, and my wife, who is of Ukrainian descent, have especially been subjected to harassment, insults and threats … some so severe I cannot share them in mixed company.”
