Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Democrats are jubilant their Big Blue Wave gave them control over the House of Representatives in yesterday’s midterms. Analysts expect Democrats to win a maximum of 35 seats in the House, more than enough to impose their will on legislation they want to pass.
The Democrat’s heavy loss in the Senate, however, robbed them of the chance to completely rein in and probably impeach Donald Trump. They lost three Senate seats to the GOP, giving the latter at least 51 seats as of the early morning hours today, Wednesday.
It was also a day of triumph in the Governor’s races. Democrats now control 22 states to the Republican’s 28. That a massive improvement to the previous situation when there were only 16 Democrat governors versus 33 Republicans.
Political analysts said the midterms saw widespread voter repudiation of Trump and his divisive and politics of hate, division, and racism.
Trump bragged the midterms were a referendum on himself and his performance as president. The outcome of the vote yesterday proves Americans are united in despising him. CNN called the Democrat’s victory in the House a very significant defeat for Trump.
Yesterday’s victory will place Democrats in control of the House for the first time since 2010. It will likely return House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to the office of speaker.
“Tomorrow will be a new day in America,” said Pelosi in a speech declaring victory late Tuesday night. “Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans. It’s about restoring the Constitution’s checks and balances to the Trump administration.”
Democrats will now have the ability to launch investigations into Trump and his Cabinet members. They will to go after the president’s tax returns. They might legislation aimed at protecting special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.
Democrats will also have the ability to check the GOP on economic issues such as taxes and healthcare. They will also reach across the aisle to attain bipartisan cooperation to slash drug prices or rebuild infrastructure.
Democrats will help shape how voters across the country view the president and whether they will support him in his re-election bid a mere two years away.
There remains the persistent possibility Democrats will push for Trump’s impeachment. This move now depends evidence uncovered by Mueller’s Russia probe, or the Democrats’ own investigations.
In delivering her party’s victory speech, Pelosi also said Democrats will clean-up corruption and insist on transparency and openness by the Trump administration. She promised Democrats will combat what she called dark special interests.
She promised to fight hard against Sen. Mitch McConnel’s attamptts to gut healthcare and do away with pre-existing conditions. She also said Democrats will pass legal protections for young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children. And, of course, Democrats will demand stricter gun control.
Pelosi, however, also called for touted national unity. She urged Americans to remember they’re one country while proclaiming elections are about the future and what we do for our children’s future.
“A Democratic Congress will work for solutions that bring us together. Because we have all had enough of division. Because we have all had enough of division,” she said.
Overall spending in the midterms was projected to reach $5.2 billion, about $1 billion more than any previous midterm.
